”We have no control over when we die or how we die. We must instead take responsibility for what we do have control over - how we choose to live.”
Erwin McManus
At Changing Patterns, PC, we believe healthy people seek therapy. Oftentimes, society places a stigma on therapy and labels individuals who seek it as “weak” or “messed up.” To the contrary, we believe asking for help is a sign of strength: you recognize your limitations and have the courage to face things that are bothering you rather than repeating negative patterns of behavior. We avoid labels and instead focus on strengths, capabilities, and what is working in your life.
Before beginning treatment, it is important to be aware of the possible benefits and risks of therapy. Most people who obtain behavioral health services benefit from the process and create positive changes in their lives: improved mood, enhanced relationships, and an overall sense of direction.
The risk of addressing issues that have not been looked at before may bring up unwanted feelings, such as anger, sadness, or other emotional pain. In addition, sometimes others may not agree with a direction you decide to pursue. These experiences are likely to provide opportunities for growth as well as unique challenges. If such feelings arise for you, it is not unusual and actually may indicate you are in the midst of healing hurts that have been covered up for a long time. If this occurs, it is important to discuss these feelings with your therapist.
